Biblical Grounds for Divorce

A Pastoral Statement for Our Church Family

Our Heart for Marriage
At Crossway Church, we treasure marriage as a covenant designed by God to reflect the faithful love of Christ for His church (Ephesians 5:31–32). Divorce is never part of God’s original design, and we approach it with deep grief. Yet Scripture acknowledges that in a fallen world, certain sins can so violate the covenant that divorce is a just and God-honoring response.

Clear Biblical Grounds
Historically, Christians have recognized two explicit biblical grounds for divorce:
1. Sexual Immorality (porneia) – Persistent, unrepentant sexual sin is a betrayal of the one-flesh covenant (Matthew 19:9).
2. Desertion by an Unbelieving Spouse – When an unbeliever abandons the marriage, the believer is “not enslaved” (1 Corinthians 7:15).

Covenant-Breaking Sins Also Addressed by Scripture
- Persistent, Unrepentant Abuse – Patterns of violence, threats, coercion, or oppressive control are a willful abandonment of the marriage vows and violate God’s call to love and cherish (Malachi 2:16; Psalm 11:5).
- Severe Neglect – Habitual failure to provide for one’s spouse’s basic needs, including material provision, safety, and marital intimacy, is condemned in passages such as Exodus 21:10–11 and 1 Timothy 5:8.
- Habitual, Unrepentant Pornography Use – When pornography becomes a substitute for marital intimacy, it falls within the biblical category of sexual immorality (Matthew 5:28; 19:9).
In each case, the sin must be habitual, serious, and unrepentant, resulting in real harm and destruction of the covenant.

The Role of the Church
We do not take divorce lightly. Pastors and elders must walk carefully with those in such situations, pursuing repentance and reconciliation whenever possible. Yet when a spouse persists in covenant-breaking sin, God’s Word allows the innocent spouse to be freed. The church must protect the oppressed, uphold biblical justice, and stand with those making such difficult decisions.

Our Commitment
We are committed to:
- Supporting those who suffer under covenant-breaking sin.
- Listening to and answering questions from our church family.
- Upholding both the sanctity of marriage and God’s provision for the oppressed.
If you have questions or are uncertain about these biblical grounds, please come to one of the pastors. It is vital for the unity of the body that we seek understanding together in the light of God’s Word (Ephesians 4:3, 15).
